Artist's Comments

An artist's block, that is...

Try to see it from the dragon's perspective, perhaps?

This is for everyone who endured my lament about an artist's block, but with a particular dedication to *junkauge (flying in from the top right corner as Sun Wukong, or 'Monkey' from Journey to the West of Chinese literature), whose suggestion for dealing with a block was to draw the wretched thing...

This was begun a while ago. I didn't really know what I was doing with it. The dragon was simply an exercise in being absorbed in drawing something seemingly 'wrought', but which came easily without having to think much. It became a very small gathering of familiar figures rallying to see this block...

I don't know - it isn't supposed to make sense. :XD:

I drew the fairy in the bottom left corner last of all. My finest nib wants replacing and made a fair pig's ear of her, unfortunately, but there we are...

Ink in large Moleskine sketchbook (130x210mm).

I'm afraid I'm not quite back yet, in spite of what I'd hoped, so I apologise for the yet unanswered comments. I've read almost all of them at last though, so thank you all so much. V6 was treacherous when I posted my last journal entry about taking a break back in early July, and I've learned that quite a number of people were never notified of that entry at all. Oh, well...

So impressive, and I'm sure it's even more so in real life :deviation:

This is fantastic! Fabulous! Such excellent drawing and what a brilliant idea! I love the expression on the dragon's face - looks like he's really puzzled and trying to understand that 'block'. The picture makes it's own sense :)

Sorry I never realised you were taking a break, or suffering a block - I didn't receive the journal entry you mention. When I get a block/the doldrums/whatever I sometimes find it helpful to experiment with other mediums or just splash ink or paint around with no aim in mind just playing like a child...this can help to relax the mind and help creativity to flow back again (though it does depend what has caused the block)...sometimes it's just a process of patience and waiting for the creative force to re-charge though this is difficult when one has commissions waiting....

I'm reading recently some fantasy novels by Andrew Sapkowski - few of them tell stories about dragons - wise and powerful creatures who could appear undercover even as men.
Your ilustration strongly influenced my imagination - perfect detail on the dragon's wings and head. And the small characters around - each with a different expression.
Briliant! =)

I'd say an artists block like that was well worth suffering. :)

There's a lane that leads to fairyland... it's just a breath away.

Always a great pleasure to see you new ( and old! ) works. It strongly remains me of Dore, especially black&white drawings and skethes. That's really fantastic. You should be a man of great patience, to do so detailed jewellery work =)

W O W!
All I can do with a block is ruin it :(
:iconjezhawk:
you'll get through it. If this is what you produce with an artists block you don't have anything to worry about!!

I would second the doodling suggestion for the block. Although I imagine dragon-style doodle would pretty much shred the moleskine to pieces.. :noes: Just let your mind wander and be free of any expectations. Doodle at will, any will, any medium, anything. Doodles aren't supposed to make sense nor shape. But this is still an amazing doodle!

so love me for my scars,
hate me up to the stars.
I'll see you around the bridge of no return
forever wanting, fearing the burn.
