Wonderful! What do you paint/draw onto paper wise?

Arches cold pressed 300gsm/140lb watercolour paper. :) Although the texture that is more visible here is more likely that of the proof sheet, as I had to scan from that. I still don't have my originals back yet from the publisher.

I like the effect of it, but your paintings are all stunning. Make sure they give you them back and haven't done a run for it!

:) I love it! My grandmother used to have hens. It was my job to gather the eggs - I wish I would have come across some golden ones then! :giggle: Well done!

Have you checked out Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800)? A Japanese painter who probably painted more chickens (and other fantastical fowl) than any other painter...his depictions are intensely detailed and rendered to the point of being psychedelic. He's considered an eccentric, along with Soga Shohaku, of 18th century Japanese painting...

I've just looked him up and just realized that I came across his work before without having remembered his name. Thank you so much for the reminder!

From the pics I've seen so far in this gallery (I'm working my way backwards ^^), this one is the most realistic. The pose of the hen is making me think it'll move in that typically sudden way of the chicken any second now.
So much detail in here too...
How do you manage to create the grainy look? The few times I've worked with watercolor, I never got something like this...

(And where to get that book? Seeing all those illustrations for it, I'm really interested now. :))

Thank you so much. I think the grain is thanks to the paper. I use Arches cold pressed watercolour block (140lb/300gm2).

The Red Fairy Book is published by the Folio Society and available from them. I'm afraid you do need to be registered with them to order their books.
