…If I were Lord of Tartary,
I’d wear a robe of beads,
White, and gold, and green they’d be-
And clustered thick as seeds;
And ere should wane the morning-star,
I’d don my robe and scimitar,
And zebras seven should draw my car
Through Tartary’s dark glades…

Part of a set of illustrations I did for The Oxford Book of Children’s Poetry, edited by Michael Harrison and Christopher Stuart-Clark. Published by Oxford University Press, 2007.

This illustration accompanies the poem Tartary by Walter de la Mare.

Pencil, 2007.
