Artist's Comments

First spread of The Night Before Christmas, by Clement C. Moore, published by Walker Books, 2007 .

You can see two views of the pop-up at the end of the book here: [link] .

Scanned from actual book spread. The original silhouettes were drawn in black ink and gouache.

The jacket and two other illustrations from the book are here:

______________________________

This book (my fourth) has done so well, completely to my astonishment. There are three co-editions: US, published by Candlewick Press; French, published by Editions Milan; and Japanese (I'm afraid I don't know the publisher's name for this...) The Golden Treasury Bookshop in Southwest London even reproduced the silhouettes for their window display last year: [link] .
This was also the first book I've illustrated to have earned me royalties. It was all quite bewildering...

Merry Christmas, all!

Eeeeeeeeee! *joy*

I love them all, but I think this page is my favourite. Just... all... the.. details! The mice in the attic! The ink bottle on the writing desk! The parrot! The globe! All the lovely things in the cabinet! Eee! That's the kind of illustration I always loved as a child. (And still do love, of course!) Where you can look at the same page over and over and still notice new things all the time.

And, of course, the elegance, the delicacy, the ingenuity... And one particular thing that pleases me: the gate formed of delicate white lines on black, and beside it the vines formed of delicate black lines on white... I guess there is something especially aesthetically pleasing about the contrast, my eye is continuously drawn there.

Thank you for sharing these! Finding more of your lovely art always makes my day. I apologize for commenting excessively - it stems from the most sincere admiration! :floating:

Just incredible. How big was the original piece? I mean, how small the details are?..

I've always loved the black silhouettes: it is so elegant and reminds me of the past. Yours are so detailed and so precise that I am quite speechless: it is really gorgeous (I know I'm repeating myself... But I can't find other words to qualify your works than highly elogious ones...). I like the feeling that we are in front of a dollhouse and that we can see everyone even the little mice under the roof...
