'She set out very early the next morning'

Illustration for Princess Rosette from The Red Fairy Book, edited by Andrew Lang; published by The Folio Society, 2008.

Pen and ink and watercolour on Arches cold pressed watercolour paper, 250 x 190 mm.

Other illustrations for the book: [link]

The queen is 'mounted upon a pretty little white mule, which was shod with solid gold, and two of her ladies rode behind her on beautiful horses'. She is seeking advice from the hermit after learning that her longed-for daughter, the Rosette of the title, will in time inadvertently bring death and destruction upon her two sons.

I'd approached this tale, by Mme Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy, once before during university ([link]). I was pleased to have had the chance to do so again professionally, even if I only got to do just one illustration for it this time. Perhaps someday I will get the opportunity to treat it wholly as one project again...

I know it may be some time before you get a chance to reply to this but you've replied in the past which leaves me hopeful - Do you have a specific source that you referred to for the dresses for the Red Fairy book - Especially those with the slashed sleeves? Is there a particular country or period they are from or are they based on Victorian images of medieval garments?
I am trying to find period references for something similar to these images of yours to make a medieval dress for a local society but am drawing blanks or not-close-enoughs in most of the references I have found so far.
Cheers - and I look forward to whatever else you work upon.

I rarely have just one source for anything, but contemporary paintings always feature strongly in my references and research, so I will have looked at paintings by Raphael and others of the high Renaissance (incidentally, I think slashes came into being from about late fifteenth century, so they were more Renaissance features than medieval; although I suppose it depends on how highly fashionable and forward-looking one claims to be :giggle:). Good costume and historical fashion books will have plenty of good paintings. :D

Whilst typing this up, I just went to look at some Raphael portraits, and look! I remember that these were definitely among the ones I looked at for this illustration:

Thankyou VERY much.
I have to go and have a look at Portuguese and Spanish costumes from about that time and see what they were doing - there's a fair bit of cross over between those areas.
It does looking like the time frame of the slashes I like are definately around renaissance, fortunately that still falls within the overall span of time that we work within.

If you are interested I'll send a photo of whatever I eventually do construct in the way of costume.

Things that strike me: the diffuse light in the forest background, the golden hooves on the mule, and the queen's lovely dress.

This edition was published by the Folio Society, as well as three other colours in the series: Blue, Yellow, and Pink. I illustrated the Red and the others were illustrated by other artists. :)
