'
She set out very early the next morning'
Illustration for
Princess Rosette from
The Red Fairy Book, edited by Andrew Lang; published by The Folio Society, 2008.
Pen and ink and watercolour on Arches cold pressed watercolour paper, 250 x 190 mm.
Other illustrations for the book:
[link]The queen is 'mounted upon a pretty little white mule, which was shod with solid gold, and two of her ladies rode behind her on beautiful horses'. She is seeking advice from the hermit after learning that her longed-for daughter, the Rosette of the title, will in time inadvertently bring death and destruction upon her two sons.
I'd approached this tale, by Mme Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy, once before during university (
[link]). I was pleased to have had the chance to do so again professionally, even if I only got to do just one illustration for it this time. Perhaps someday I will get the opportunity to treat it wholly as one project again...
