She set out very early the next morning

Illustration for Princess Rosette from The Red Fairy Book, edited by Andrew Lang; published by The Folio Society, 2008. [link]

Other illustrations for the book: [link]

Pen and ink and watercolour.

File scanned from a proof.

This is probably my favourite illustration from this set. Those of you who have seen my early submissions will know that I approached this tale back in university about five/six years ago, and it has since become something of a mild obsession of mine. I was very pleased that I got to illustrate it professionally, even if it belonged to a collection and I only got to do one illustration for this tale itself.

The illustration shows the queen 'mounted upon a pretty little white mule, which was shod with solid gold, and two of her ladies rode behind her on beautiful horses'; She is seeking advice from the hermit after learning that her longed-for daughter, the Rosette of the title, will in time inadvertently bring death and destruction upon her two sons.

Only in English and only by The Folio Society, I'm afraid. :(

You can usually buy by becoming a member (I have never regretted it - they produce very beautiful books, as you see), but I seem to have heard that you can sometimes buy without joining. Perhaps there is some information on this on their site?

And thank you so much! :blush
Thank you so much!

Here's a link for The Folio Society, in case you're interested: [link]

You usually have to be a member, however. You can buy books to join, though I seem to have heard there is a way to buy without joining. I'm afraid I'm hazy on this, but perhaps there is something on the site which explains it. I don't get royalties for this, so I'm not simply urging you for my own sake. ;P They produce the most beautiful books, so I have always thought them thoroughly worth becoming a member of - even before I came to be published by them.
yawaooon!
that would have taken an insane ammount of effort, skill, and time!
your incredible!

It took a very long time indeed! It was the very first illustration I created for this set, in fact.

Thank you!
