Artist's Comments

Scanned version of my original binding design for the 150th anniversary edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, published by The Folio Society, in a limited edition of 1,000 copies (November 2009): [link]

The metallic colours used are not apparent in this scanned version; please see the photograph of the same piece here:

Gold, silver and copper gouache on 160 gsm/98lbs Daler Rowney pastel paper, about ?325 x 245mm.

A photograph of the final binding on the actual book will be submitted once I have my artist's copy in November.

What a delight this is! All this inventing, this producing, takes place in a pleasing, lively dream.

It's simply so stunning that it hurts.

Completely lovely. I love all the little details, like that bunch of grapes on the vine. One could get lost in this painting for ages. =D

I assume it would be quite cruel of me to ask you just about how long this took... :giggle:

This one almost has a completely different charm to it... I like both equally, of course!

Beautiful - whether metallic or not. The amount you can do with such a limited color palette always amazes me. :)

God, I love this.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was standing in the middle of The Peacock Room (Whistler) in the Freer Gallery. And not just because of the obvious correlation—but the style and the gold detailing. It's quite the experience, just standing there in complete silence taking in all that detail...

*mind wanders 25 miles northeast and hangs out around the Smithsonian Castle*

That being said, this is a definite :+fav: and I have to reiterate, I love your work.

Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that's why it is so complicated.
