Reverence by Himmapaan Reverence by Himmapaan
Révérence

A sort of companion piece to Run. The cormorant is Katrina van Grouw, the author of The Unfeathered Bird and one of my most admired living artists, whom Marc and I had the honour of meeting.

DA does not allow accented characters in titles (very poor). My choice of the French 'Révérence' is in reference to both the act of bowing and to the more obvious meaning of showing great respect.

I did this relatively quickly and am not entirely happy with the result, but it will do for now. It also did not scan too well.

Pencil, coloured pencils, sepia ink, marker and gouache on recycled paper.

The detail in the feathers is mind-blowing :) And I really like the texture you worked in ^___^

Oh, I see, the graphite did its unfathomable scanning refusal. I wish graphite would scan better... every time. But aside that it looks great. Though I do wish for some grounding shadows on the birds.

Thank you, Evan. Ah, yes, I've been doing the non-grounded vignette thing often of late that I forget when shadows would have been more apt.

That is a really good book, excellent i'd say, can't wait to get it!
This really gives it justice, love the curiosity in the eyes of the magpie, the impatience in the stance of the crane and the majesty in the cormorant :)

How do you manage to get those subtle tints on the bird's plumage? A beautiful piece of work. And the the book is fascinating..

Thank you. I'm afraid I fudged the cormorant somewhat, but I'm relieved that it seems to work for you! The tints are just many layers of colour.
