Quatrain I

AWAKE! for Morning in the Bowl of Night
Has flung the Stone that puts the Stars to flight;
And Lo! the Hunter of the East has caught
The Sultan's Turret in a Noose of Light.

I'm not sure what I think of this one. But, well...

lllustration for the 150th anniversary edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, published by The Folio Society, in a limited edition of 1,000 copies: Edition sold out

Watercolours and gouache highlights on Fabriano Artistico cold pressed watercolour paper (the old kind which I like and they don't make anymore!), 140lbs/300 gsm; 240 x 135mm.

You and I came up with wildly different imagery from this quatrain; when I was reading the verse, I got an image of goldfish stars flitting away from a coin of sunlight, with a reflection of dawn-kissed onion spire skewed in one corner of the pond/picture.

Your sweeping scope is ever so much more appealing, and I relish the bow and knife you tucked into the clouds riding companion to the sun. Quite pretty.
