Perseus and Andromeda by Himmapaan Perseus and Andromeda by Himmapaan
*N.B. Please read the description through (including the one in the linked rough) before rebuking my mythological information. Thank you!

Final colour piece (at long last) of this rough: [link]
Sample illustration for Templar Publishing.

Pen & ink and watercolour, 210 x 297 mm.

Scanned for me by the wonderful ~slightlytriangle from a colour photocopy.

I scribbled a little Conté crayon over some areas of the sky and used some of it for the reflected lightning in the clouds - sadly, the copy has made this rather harsher and grainier than it actually is in the original.

Sharp eyed observers will not only notice the slight change in the background rocks for a better composition. The art director at Templar (a UK publisher) reminded me of the strangely prudish attitude of American children's publishers (just as a matter of course, in the event that co-editions might arise), who would be sure to balk at even the kind of chaste nudity with which Andromeda is here depicted (incidentally, I much prefer her in the rough as a better drawing), so more hair had to be strategically blown to cover her one visible breast. They would even go so far as to find discomfort in Pegasus' genitalia (I kid you not). As there was no way I could cover this, however, I simply had to avoid drawing it altogether.

For an idea of the in-progress work on this, please see the bottom of this journal entry: [link]

*Though not originally conceived for it, this deviation is eligible and has therefore been entered into ~Flynn-the-cat's competition on the theme of 'Flight' (a wonderfully versatile theme - details in Flynn's journal). Call it an incidental entry, if you will.

**If viewers wish to see this even larger for details (though I think this is just about comfortable viewing), this can be edited. Please let me know.

I love this. Perseus and Andromeda is one of my favorite Greek legends, and this is such a perfect illustration for it - you've caught the crux of the story in this one instant. :)

I'm sorry, I didn't see that link. You're really talented.
I know I shouldn't expect artistic representations to be completly accurate. It's a bad habit of mine.

Did you take the time to read the descriptions, perhaps?
wanzmo Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2012
Visually beautiful, mythologically incorrect: Perseus never rode Pegasus.

If I was to close my eyes and see this story it would not look as wonderfull as what you have here.

This is fantastic! The level of detail is - like in all of your pictures - very impressive, and I love how you paint your pictures traditionally. Everything looks beautiful, though I think I like Pegasus the most. The wings are so well done! :)

Wow, I can't even begin to describe how amazing this is! This is so beautiful and balanced and there's so much action in just one glance! The fine details are incredible!! I also love the fact that you are using a Greek mythology concept. I don't even know that much about it myself, (I definitely don't know the entire story with this one here, but I do have a basic gist of it) but I have always found it very interesting. I hope you will do more of them in the future! :) Or not if you don't want of course, all of your art is fantastic anyway.

You used pen and ink--just wondering, does this mean you used one of those calligraphy-looking pens, or did you maybe use a regular pen like a micron type? And how large is the original picture? There is just SO much tiny detail! And also I was wondering: do you do the watercolor first (with initial pencil line art in place) and then you ink over that, or is it the other way around, and you just fill in the spaces between the ink? Sorry for so many moronic questions. Your artwork always completely bewilders me, even what you call a "rough sketch" is an amazing work of art in itself, so I can barely comprehend how you would go about drawing such a thing.

wow this is amazing! This is one of those pictures I could stare at for hours. As a fan of Nordic and Greek mythology, I don't seem to find many images in that genre that are so eye-catching. I really like this, I think you did a fantastic job and it's very inspiring!
