' Part of my lace is gone... and I do not know how I am to contrive'

Emma Woodhouse, Harriet Smith and Mr Elton.

Pen & ink and watercolour.

An illustration to Jane Austen's Emma published by the Folio Society, 2007; the second of three Austen novels I've so far illustrated for them. This illustration is the only one I'm most happy with from this book. It was on display for a short period at the British Library in the Folio Society Gallery there, as part of the 'A Houseful of Books' exhibition, celebrating 40 years of the Folio Society.

(Note: Scanned from a proof - the crease at the bottom was due to the rather non-too-careful manner in which the proof sheet was folded when sent to me)

I love their clothing. Did you have to research the fashions of the time when you illustrated the book, or did you just use your own imagination?

Thank you. :) I'm fascinated by history and historical costume anyway and have a good idea of (in this case) Regency/Empire clothing, but research is always important especially when illustrating something in a 'real' context. With period pieces such as these, it's not only important to understand the clothes they wore, but the customs, manners, mores etc. :)

Wow! This is just gorgeous! The delicacy of the tree branches agains the washes of the clouds, the engaging perspective created by the road, the meticulous details of the figures...I could mistake it for a Dulac. Great to see new paintings from you!

Thank you so much! I did say I was rather hoping to post more of the unpublished things, but I scarcely have time for personal projects these days and this gallery is left to stagnate somewhat.

These Austen illustrations are pretty recent compared to some of the others I've posted. They were very kindly scanned by an obliging friend. It's a slightly cumbersome operation - my having to send proofs or copies to her, but it will do for now!
