O zittre nicht, mein lieber sohn...

Prince Tamino and the Queen of the Night from act I of Mozart's opera, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute).

Pen and ink and watercolour, 2003.
290 x 390mm.

The prince carries a miniature portrait of Pamina, the Queen's daughter, whom she is imploring Tamino to rescue from what we first believe to be the wicked clutches of Sarastro...

The truth is quite the opposite, as the opera gradually reveals...

I'd hoped to paint moths milling at the feet of the Queen, but they turned out looking too much like butterflies. I'm afraid I was almost just 'throwing' them in at the last stage. It was reprehensible. :no: I hope you can forgive it - it was a few years ago now... ^^;

Good Lord, this is gorgeous. The Magic Flute is one of my top 5 operas. (How dorky am I that I can rattle off my top 5 operas? :-o) The Queen is beautiful - I love the stars in her clothes and the bats flying around her. And your prince is rather good-looking - very different than the rather rotund one that I saw. LoL. :+fav: definitely.

Q: How many lawyers does it take to roof a house?
A: Depends how thin you slice 'em.
Absolutely fantastic. :)
Thank you so much! Flute is certainly one of my favourite operas too. I'm no less dorky than you in the least, the only thing preventing me from listing my top five is that I love so many!

I wanted the pair of bats to acually form part of her dress. I was also hoping to paint moths around her, but they turned out looking too much like butterflies. :roll: It was a few years ago, so please do forgive that... ^^; :giggle:

Wonderful. It was amazing when I first saw it and it's still amazing now. I love all the details so much.
The folds in the clothing are simply wonderful and just, love it so much. I also like how far away the queen seems to be from Tamino even though she's speaking with him, much like in the opera.
Great job, once again!

I am blown away by how much detail you can bring to a relatively small canvas. I mean, look at those butterflies!! They're microscopic and still have clarity and movement. As always, I'm impressed.
Wow. That's beautiful. I particularly like the Queen's cloak; it looks like it holds the sky.
