Night Before Christmas: Pop-Up by Himmapaan Night Before Christmas: Pop-Up by Himmapaan
This one is part of The Night Before Christmas. It's the original pop-up I made for the end of the book. I hadn't been able to post it before as I've only just got it back.

Here is another photograph, from a slightly less steep angle. It's probably the marginally better picture in terms of quality, but this one shows the layers better.

Made from white Canson Mi-Teintes paper. All the pieces were hand-cut with a scalpel. The base measures 472 x 236mm when open. The pop-up is roughly 155mm tall at its highest point (the church steeple).

It's endured a tiny amount of wear and dirt, having been in the hands of the paper engineers and cutters who reproduced it for the book two years ago. But my photograph is rather poor (sorry), so they are disguised.

You can see a picture of the book's version of the pop-up on Amazon, as well as other pictures kindly shared by a customer. There are also some very kind reviews there (which make my eyes red). I didn't post many pages from this book in my gallery, as the book is better seen in person. The pages contain cuts in them which reveal glimpses into the preceding and following pages.

__________

Merry Christmas!

Amazing, inspirational work. Kinda makes me want to do a whole book with all pop-ups. I'm sure you've thought of it too?

edit: oooh. My bad -- you already have! WOW.

The funny thing is that I've done these before, and I know I have the skill to do it... just that I don't have the drive :( Working on a team helps a lot... and having a good writer too...

I'm afraid you misunderstood slightly. ^_^ There is no template to purchase. I made this pop-up myself for the book which I illustrated. You can see more details about it and links in the description. :)

hello!! I am trying to make my own intricate pop up book. How do you make it pop "up" instead of staying down near the card? what folds do you use and how do you know if it will fit? :S

How do you get such clean lines? I always seem to have snags. Just about keeping your instruments sharp?

And patience. Also, when cutting small details like tight curves, making small cuts in succession yields better results than trying to cut each curve in one stroke. :)
