Fuzzy Apatosaurus Juvenile by Himmapaan Fuzzy Apatosaurus Juvenile by Himmapaan
This perhaps rather provocative illustration was commissioned by Brian Switek for his forthcoming book, My Beloved Brontosaurus. Do please visit this Love in the Time of Chasmosaurs post to read a little more about it (certainly, please do so before you raise an outcry. Or you may expect something like this or this ;)). The image quality in the blog entry is better too and doesn't suffer from the same woeful compression as here.

ETA: Matt Wedel has also made a few observations on this over on SV-POW.

Coloured pencils, sepia ink, and gouache on recycled paper.

Now that you have drawn this, it looks like sauropods are supposed to have feathers.

I love the fuzziness! I can imagine this would be provocative for traditionalists, but what's science without some wild hypotheses to encourage further research? ;) Anyway, he's adorable and beautiful.

:giggle: It really is amazing the range of things that can be called provocative!

Oh, and are you still taking commissions like this? ;)

It depends on many things, I'm afraid. This was for a publication, so it was not unlike most of my other work. I find it very hard to fit in personal commissions and to know how to price it.

Fair enough. ;p

You know what I'd love to see? The Niroot Puttapipat Pop-Up Book of Dinosaurs.

It just would help me to know who's been sharing it and whether they included the right explanation and credit or not.

Yes, I know about LITC, I posted the entry myself and mentioned it in my description. ;) If you saw it on the LITC Facebook page, that's great. I just wondered whether it was shared by anybody else, is all. :)

I heard once that baby sauropods had been discovered with scales, but those were probably titanosaurs which have armour. The possibility of feathered juvenile sauropods is certainly intriguing.

You may be interested in Matt Wedel's thoughts on it. I've edited my description to include a link to that SV-POW post, too.

very cool and if it's an adolescent even cute
this is what baby from Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend should have looked like and little foot should have been even fuzzier but judging from chickens the hatchlings Should be less fuzzy :)

I dare say, I am reminded of a squirrel. It would look silly to have a squirrel tail.

Why not fuzzy . Seems possible when they're young and relatively small .
