'Aprontosaurus' by Himmapaan 'Aprontosaurus' by Himmapaan
Introducing Aprontosaurus pengi. :D

The correct name of the sauropod popularly recognised as 'Brontosaurus' is of course Apatosaurus. Though the name 'Brontosaurus' seems resolutely to refuse to disappear: even some dinosaur enthusiasts are sentimentally fond of it.

In a moment of dino-silliness (and I have plenty of those), I squished the two names together to form 'Aprontosaurus', and this was the immediate image which entered my head.

I can take almost no credit for the design of the wonderful steam-engine-type-thing: it was directly inspired by French animator Michel Ocelot's Les Trois Inventeurs, and I only made a few modifications.

LMAO This is brilliant! It's humor is only outmatched by the image itself. Very well done, and both characters are so cute with so much expression! :)

very clever! I actually like the brontosaurus. it was sad that they discovered it wasn't real. I guess we can add it to the never-ending list of mythical creatures. (:

It isn't that it wasn't real -- simply that it's the same animal as Apatosaurus. ^_^ Or more precisely, same genus but different species.

 I'm so glad I'm not the only one who read Mr. Aprontosaurus's dialogue in Nelson from The Simpson's voice. It just makes this already epic little scenario all the more hilarious! Love the little touches of color, too. :D (Wonders how many failed to notice that...)

You are insane! :XD:

Also, I've lived a lie, then! :o I thought the name was 'Brontosaurus', what made them change it? I'll have to investigate :sherlock:

I'm afraid so. :giggle:

Apatosaurus was named first (1877), so that takes precedence according to ICZN rules. :) 'Brontosaurus' was thought to be a sauropod of a different genus when it was named (1879), but it was given the wrong skull -- that of a Camarasaurus. They have been recognised as belonging to the same genus since 1903, though different species: Apatosaurus ajax (the type species) and Apatosaurus ('Brontosaurus') excelsus. ^_^

So 'Apatosaurus' wasn't the later change at all. But for whatever reason, 'Brontosaurus' had so embedded itself in popular imagination that it remained there -- for over a century now -- and despite having been scientifically disregarded. :XD:

:XD: I preffer insane people to people with no imagination

Oh! :o Thanks for sharing the info. I find it quite interesting! I had not delved in dinosaur themes since I was 14 or 15, and I hadn't read about it, so it's nice to know :) Maybe the reason that name stuck is thanks to the sound: it's deep, potent and at the same time gentle. A very nice description of the Apatosaurus, right? Apatosaurus sounds good too, but it doesn't have the same impact :/

Also, I've been feelin' a bit silly as of late so I want to share some links I hope make you LOL heartily ;P

This is awfully silly. And impeccably drawn. But, I wonder... that is some very strong support material in the steam engine.

Oh , that's good I've been a Dino fan since I was a kid " like a lot of people " I remember reading old books that called them brontosaurus's . I love your new name for them as well as the fun picture . As a sub note , only the allosaurus is related to birds the sauropods " apatosaurus's family " died out and the theropods continued in the form of birds after the great extinction .
