Illustration for the second layer of spread 1 (still with me?) of Aladdin, published by Walker Books. Available from Amazon, though please try your bookstore first.

This edition is a novelty book and works rather like a theatre. For an idea of how this appears in actuality, please visit this deviation.

Other glimpses of some of the original artworks for the book are in this folder.

The unsightly brushmarks were due in no small part to the ink I was using. The final reproduction does not show them, of course.

This is amazing work! The detail and sharpness of silhouette is awesome! Well composed.
What kind of ink were you using? I've had a devil's time locating ink that is solid (not streaky) and does not devour my nostrils with unholy stench.

Thank you!

I think I may have been using about three different inks at the time!

The one I use most is Winsor & Newton's Indian ink, which I dilute with about half its quantity of boiled water (cooled, of course), or use distilled water if you can get it. This reduces the shine and improves the flow. For a really dark, matte black, Higgins Black Magic is also good.

You're welcome!

Thanks for letting me know on the ink. I had some trouble with Windsor and Newton's due to shine and flow - that's a good trick!
I'll give Higgin's a try next time!

Oh, try Liquitex carbon black, too. I forgot that earlier.
